Something Remembered
I recently spoke to a friend about the idea of finding our purpose. Since this is such a personal statement I didn't have an exact answer for her.
But it made me remember a question somebody asked me once:
"What gift do you have inside of you that you could share with the world?"
Before I tell you my answer to that question, here’s what I like about the question... everything it doesn't ask.
It doesn't ask what your major was, or what jobs you've had, or what you think you want to do. It asks what's inside you. And then it asks you to share it, which is a much gentler thing than having to be it at this very moment.
The answer can be small, too. Mine was:
My heart is full. I like art, and I like kids. I can share my heart that way.
— Rather a simple answer. And it was a turning point in my life. It's why I do what I do today, in fact. I became an elementary school art teacher and that led to teaching adults.
So this morning I'll ask you what was asked of me.
"What gift do you have inside of you that you could share with the world?"
