🫟 Something I Noticed

The season has changed.

I've rededicated some time to getting back to my watercolor paintings. Earlier this year I learned that I seem to be allergic to my oil paints and haven't painted since. The leaves are turning here in North Carolina, and with the weather newly chilly, it feels like a good time for self-reflection and rededication.

So yesterday I took inventory of my watercolor paints and made a chart to help me go forward. Some of the paints are old — eight years, maybe — and a bit sticky. I noticed the Winsor Newton ones were still the creamiest.

I'll have to shift my thinking a bit: back to building lighter values with water instead of white, and leaning more on drawing skills to sketch the scene before I paint, since a stroke can't be undone in watercolor the way it can in oil.

But the ease of watercolor feels simpler — like getting back to basics, no pressure.

I'll start this week and keep you posted.

📕 From My Bookshelf

I read this book last year from watercolorist, Charles Reid, Painting What You Want to See. It full of discussion about value, color, edges, shadow shapes, light shapes, emphasis and style as it pertains to painting with watercolor. I loved it! He spoke my language so I'm revisiting it again this week as I embark on my watercolor studies.

Highly recommended for watercolor and all painters. 👍
