The Confidence to Create:

The "Modern" in the Modern Mixing Wheel refers to the 3  colors (cyan, magenta & yellow) I've chosen to use as primary colors in our color wheel. These 3 colors will give you the most variety of bold and muted colors possible. The choice of traditional red, blue & yellow as the starting primary colors limits the range of colors you can make.

Through the process of making and using the Modern Mixing Wheel you see how using 3 modern colors as a primary colors and white in your wheel can produce the widest variety of bold and muted colors. These wheels can then be referred back to and used as tools when you are painting to see how to get a certain color. You simply find the color you want on the wheel and work backwards to see what colors you mixed to get it. The best part about the MMW’s is with continued use, you are training your mind to think through the mixing process. In time, you will need to rely less and less on the MMWs and will be able to do this in your head.

Color mixing is challenging for all artists but especially daunting for newer ones. There are so many beautiful paint colors to choose from. How does one know what to choose? Rather than purchasing tons of different colors, I believe a more direct route for newer artists is to focus on 3 primary colors and learn how to mix them to get the widest variety of colors. This simplifies the process and teaches good basic color mixing skills necessary for painting.

1-Choose the "Masterclass + Template" option when purchasing and I will mail you 6 templates on watercolor paper to paint on. 

2-Paint on your paper, making a DIY template to follow (See video in the class)

3- Paint on your paper and use my stencil to draw your own template. COMING SOON.

Here are the Supplies I used in the video. There is also a video in the class that goes over everything. I recommend Golden Brand but you may substitue other professional quality brands. I do not recommend using inexpensive, no-name brand paints from big box discount stores. They are not pure and will not give you the proper resulting color mixtures. 

Golden Fluid Acrylics Quinacridone Magenta

Golden Fluid Acrylics Phthalo Blue (Green Shade)

Golden Fluid Acrylics Benzimidazole Yellow

White paint. I used white gesso.

1 or more paint brushes. I used a Silver Bristlon #2 filbert

A vessel with water for cleaning your brushes

A palette for mixing. I used a 12” x 16” Jack Richeson Grey Matters Paper Palette. A styrofoam plate works too. 

3 Modern Mixing Wheel watercolor paper templates (or dyi on your paper) 

A spray bottle with water to spray your paints and keep them wet (optional)

A palette knife for mixing (helpful)

Paper towels 

gloves (optional)
