Introducing
THE SOUTHERN SKIES COLLECTION
Inspired by my travels around the south.
All good paintings start with an intention or inspiration. It’s the thing that catches my eye. Sometimes I feel a spark and know it will be good painting.

"Okaloosa Island", 36" X 48", oil on panel. $4800. Not framed. Studio pick up.
This is a painting that’s been years in the making. I’ve lived in NW Florida for 20 years now. And every time I go through Okaloosa Island, heading east from Fort Walton Beach, back to Destin, I see these trees. I always think, “That would be a great painting.” On this particular day, the sun was bright, the sky was so blue, and conditions were perfect for my reference. It was time to paint it.

Mid-Bay Bridge, diptych. (2) 15" x 30" oil paintings on canvases. Total width 60". Not framed. $3800. Studio pick up
Ok, I’ll admit it - I get a lot of inspiration while I’m driving. This scene was driving from Destin, over the Mid-Bay Bridge, towards Niceville. The clouds were amazing, stacked up like a layer cake. “A painting!”, I thought. But, how to do it justice?
I decided to focus on the sky shapes as opposed to the cloud shapes. This took a lot of pushing and pulling of shapes, going back and forth seeing the positive and negative areas. I made sure the first thing I did was draw out those interesting negative shapes produced by the sky to keep them top of mind. Then I did a first go on the clouds, then the background, and then back to the clouds - back and forth until, well, until it felt right.

Boca Grande
13 1/2" x 21", oil on paper, framed in a 24"x 30" Douglas fir shadow box. No glass. $900. Studio pick up.
This is a painting you may recognize. I’ve painted it in larger versions but this is the original study in oil on paper from which the others came.
I was teaching an oil workshop in Boca Grande, FL. It ended about 4pm that day. I decided to go out to the beach to get some fresh air and was delighted to see this storm rolling in. The contrast between the brilliant blue water and the storm clouds was my inspiration.

"Topsail Hill Preserve", 24" x 48", oil on canvas. Framed in an unfinished birch floater frame. $3600. Studio pick up.
I've painted several scenes from Topsail Hill Preserve in the past. I've been wanting to paint this one for a while.
The view is from the trail overlooking the scrubby foliage, walking bridge, sand dunes, and out to the gulf. I love all those elements together. It is such a unique and beautiful coastal environment here in NW Florida.
The sky shapes between the leaves and branches were my focus.

Banner Elk
40" x 40", oil on canvas. $4600. Framed in an unfinished birch floater frame. Studio pick up.
This sunset was spectacular. It was at an elevation of 5000 feet up a mountain in Banner Elk, NC. I was driving up the mountain, turned the corner, and BAM - this was what I saw. My goal was to show the spectacular colors in the sky and balance them with the shadowy dark areas that were not catching the light anymore.
The Mini-Skies
331 Bridge
Mini-Sky painting. 3 1/4" x 8", oil on paper, framed in a 8" x 16" Douglas fir shadow box. No glass.
$425 Shipping included
This painting was inspired by a morning drive, going over the 331 Bridge in Walton County, FL. I was just getting on the bridge, heading towards the beach. It was a foggy morning that gave everything a blue-gray tinge. That was what struck me. It just seemed like a beautiful painting. I was on my way to the studio and painted it immediately.

Henderson Beach
Mini- Sky painting. 3 1/4" x 8", oil on paper, framed in a 8" x 16" Douglas fir shadow box. No glass.
$425 Shipping included
I am very intrigued by night time paintings. The challenge is how to paint something that has very little light. This view in back of The Henderson Beach Resort was dark, Everything was in shadow except the last bit of pure light. I loved the contrast.

Destin Bridge
Mini- Sky painting. 3 1/4" x 8", oil on paper, framed in a 8" x 16" Douglas fir shadow box. No glass.
$425 Shipping included
So blue! It was the overwhelming blue that got me on this one. My intention was all about the color. I used it to tell the story of this late afternoon view of the Destin bridge.

One Water Place
Mini- Sky painting. 3 1/4" x 8", oil on paper, framed in a 8" x 16" Douglas fir shadow box. No glass.
$425 Shipping included
Nature sure knows how to make a masterpiece. She used her complimentary colors, blue and orange, to make this one. I think it works so well because the blue is a bit dusty, less chromatic, to balance the bold orange and peachy pinks.
